2025 – The year in review - 31/12/2025

Our services were well-attended this year and we continued to receive many newcomers.  We had seven baptisms, four of adults and three of children.  We also had one wedding, that of a young couple baptised earlier in the year.  In the course of the year, we undertook important work to repair the church roof, replace the aging tiles, and paint the cupolas and crosses.  We prayed steadfastly for the unity of the Orthodox Churchpeace in Ukraine, and peace in the Holy Land.  We prayerfully remembered Saint Tikhon of Moscow and Saint Jonah of Hankow, two holy hierarchs of the Russian Orthodox Church who reposed in 1925, one hundred years ago this year.  In May we welcomed Archbishop George on a visit to our parish in honour of our patronal feast of Saint Nicholas.  James Savage was tonsured a reader, the first time that a new reader had been tonsured in our parish since 2009.  At our Annual General Meeting in November, long-serving Parish Council members Lucea Szabunia (2012-2025) and Dean Crawford (2015-2025) retired.  They were replaced by Reader James Savage and Cyprian Minns.  We received a generous donation of $90,000 towards improvements to our church and grounds.  Late in the year, a Development Application was lodged with Newcastle City Council for this work.  When completed, it will substantially enhance our outside toilet facilities, improve access to our church and hall, and refashion our church porches.  All the news from 2025 can be read here.  Glory be to God for all things!

Plans for major improvements to our church and grounds - 10/10/2025

In 2024-25 the Parish Council finalised a plan for major improvements to our church and grounds including new and refurbished outside toilets, new entrances at the front and on both sides of the church, new access ramps to the church and hall, a small office (or, alternatively, an apartment for clergy accommodation), and new paving.  Implementation of the plan was delayed for most of 2025 as we undertook urgent repairs to our church roof and cupolas.  A Development Application (DA) is now being prepared for lodgement.  The parish received a very generous donation in September 2025 that will allow us, upon approval of the DA, to extend and refurbish the outside toilet block.  Overseeing the initial stage of this work and fundraising for subsequent stages will be a priority for the Parish Council that will be elected at our Annual General Meeting (AGM) in November.

Statement by the Synod of Bishops on the renewal of 20th-century ideologies in Russia - 05/06/2025

"The Synod of Bishops of the Russian Orthodox Church Outside of Russia finds it necessary to raise its voice out of bitter necessity, for we find that in a time of crisis and growing confrontation amongst nations, aspects of the Russian state and society are wandering onto an extremely dangerous path: instead of the promulgation of Christian repentance and purification, we observe in certain circles a return to a false, God-opposing ideology that prevailed in the last century. This return is fraught with harmful consequences. Should it continue, we fear that modern Russia risks being considered a dark stain amongst the nations, marked by a revival of spiritual corruption, instead of her being a radiant beacon of Orthodox Truth, which is surely the calling to which her long history of Christian piety directs her."  The full text of this important statement, released by the Synod of Bishops of the Russian Orthodox Church Outside Russia on Thursday 5 June 2025, can be read in English here and in Russian here.

Patriarchal Epistle on the Occasion of the 1700th Anniversary of the First Ecumenical Council - 01/06/2025

“The history of the Church is not only academic studies of the events of the past and narratives about the affairs of bygone days, the legends of ancient times, which are like the pages of a dusty book darkened by time. In the history of the Church, the Holy Spirit lives and acts, guiding us into all truth (John 16:13). That is why the study of Church history – to which I urge all of you – helps us to better understand many phenomena in contemporary religious life, teaches us to separate the main from the secondary and to distinguish spirits (1 Cor. 12:10), comprehending the all-wise Providence of God for the Church.”  Patriarch Kirill’s Epistle is available in full in Russian here.  A complete English-language translation will be shared as soon as it becomes available.

Russian Orthodox Holy Week and Pascha in Wallsend, 2025 - 20/04/2025

This year, our parish had just two traditional Holy Week services.  Matins with the reading of the Twelve Passion Gospels was served in the evening on Thursday 17 April and Vespers with the bringing out of the Shroud of Christ was served in the afternoon on Friday 18 April.  As our parish rector was serving in Gosford for Pascha this year there were no Resurrectional services in our church, and our parishioners attended festive services at either the Greek Orthodox or Serbian Orthodox parishes in Newcastle or travelled to Gosford.  God willing, we will have Paschal services in our parish again in 2026.

“Let us appreciate and sincerely give thanks unto God for His great loving-kindness and mercy shown towards fallen mankind by redeeming us from sin through His suffering on the cross and glorious Resurrection, making us heirs of His heavenly kingdom. … Let us not be tempted by the so-called pleasures and riches of this temporal world, but let us always strive for spiritual riches which do not fade away. Our way of life now will have eternal consequences." Archbishop George’s Epistle is available in full in English here and in Russian here.

The 2025 Paschal Epistle of His Eminence Metropolitan Nicholas of Eastern America and New York, First Hierarch of the Russian Church Abroad - 20/04/2025

“May the present celebration, for which we have been preparing with prayer and fasting, renew the right spirit, that is, a healthy spirit, in our hearts, in order to understand the mystery of Christ's Resurrection, to enjoy the "riches of goodness" of which Chrysostom writes, and to anticipate "eternal joy"! ...  May our feast be united with the general yearning of the faithful to God for peace and for the persecuted Ukrainian Orthodox Church, headed by His Beatitude Metropolitan Onouphry of Kiev and All Ukraine. For "if one member suffers, all the members suffer with it," says the Apostle Paul (1 Corinthians 12:26).”  Metropolitan Nicholas’s Epistle is available in full in English here and in Russian here.

The centenary of the repose of Saint Tikhon of Moscow and Saint Jonah of Hankow - 28/02/2025

This year, 2025, is the centenary of the repose of two great hierarchs of the Russian Orthodox Church:  Saint Tikhon, Patriarch of Moscow and All Russia (31 January 1865 - 7 April 1925, canonised 1981) and Saint Jonah, Bishop of Hankow (17 April 1888 - 20 October 1925, canonised 1996).  In recognition of this significant anniversary, the Synod of Bishops of our Russian Orthodox Church Outside Russia has called upon the bishops and clergy to make a particular effort to remember these two holy bishops.  To this end, they are to be commemorated at the dismissal of each Divine Liturgy up until the Great Feast of the Entry of the Most Holy Theotokos into the Temple (4 December, the day of the Patriarchal enthronement of Saint Tikhon in 1918) and to remember Saint Tikhon in a sermon and with a moleben on Sunday 6 April, the Fifth Sunday in Great Lent and the eve of the anniversary of his repose.  As there will not be a service in our parish on that Sunday, arrangements for a moleben to Saint Tikhon and another to Saint Jonah will be made later in the year.  Holy Hierarchs Tikhon and Jonah, pray to God for us!
